Sophie Foster
Artist and Lecturer
Sophie Foster
Sophie Foster is a British artist and educator based in Weimar, Germany. Her practice combines socially engaged art with textile-based processes, exploring sustainability, repair, and collective learning through participatory making. Working with salvaged fabrics, stitching, and zero-waste design principles, she investigates how domestic textiles can carry memory, knowledge, and strategies for care and survival.
She completed a BA in English Literature, Art History and Fine Art at Newcastle University before studying Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Since then, she has exhibited across Europe and developed collaborative projects that create spaces for experimentation, exchange, and shared learning.
Alongside her artistic practice, she has lectured at universities in the UK and Germany and collaborated with various cultural institutions. Between 2021 and 2024 she worked within the project Lernraum.Bauhaus, at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, coordinating the initiative Lernen am Objekt, which explored new approaches to learning through material objects and hybrid environments. In 2025 she became a member of Studio Wägetechnik e.V., where she develops and teaches zero-waste garment design.
